Now what?

Published by Peter on

People think that a coach will help them get from Point A to Point B, and that’s true. But for growth-oriented people, every Point B is also a new Point A.

Actually, strike “growth-oriented” from that last sentence. All people, no matter where they are or what they are doing, are on their way from where they are to somewhere else.

We can’t help it. That’s what life and the passage of time are.

No matter what you achieve, you are merely on some point in the journey. “A” and “B” are merely relative labels to help chronicle progress.

This sign is never wrong.

My goal as a coach is to be someone who can help you on the next segment of your journey just as well as I helped you get from your old Point A to this new Point A.

And that’s pretty much what I have to say this week.

I mean, I could talk about the client who finished the book they wanted to write. That was their Point B when we started working together. Now I’m helping them work with their agent to get it published.

When you reach Point B, what comes next?

I could talk about the project manager who came to me for a career change (Point B), and nearly a year later we are working through family conflicts around their upcoming wedding (new Point B).

I could talk about the data analyst who came to me at the end of his rope about his marriage (Point A), and a year later I am helping him grow his side business (new Point B).

Your goal may be to get through the tunnel, but what then?

Or I could talk about so many times in my own life when I achieved a thing I’d been striving for. Not once in my whole life did I think I’d arrived at the finish. I’m certainly not at the finish now.

Every Point B has always been a new Point A.

In fact, I am hoping that when my life comes to an end, I will be in mid-stride along my journey to a new Point B. I hope I won’t be bitter and angry about that journey being interrupted.

I hope I will instead be able to greet Death with a question.

“Now what?”
