You Are Here

Published by Peter on

An interesting life is a character-based story, not a plot-based story. You’re the main character, so act like it.

Yesterday I was coaching a new writing client, a young writer who had gotten feedback that her idea for a new book was boring because it wasn’t “unique and different” enough.

At this point, she only had an outline and some notes. As I read through her notes, I agreed that the story, once written, would probably be boring… but not because it wasn’t unique or different.

It would be boring because the main character moved through life responding to events rather than instigating events.

A lot of things happened to them, but nothing happened because of them. That makes for a boring character.

Any story can be a page-turner with lot of action, but if the main character isn’t driving that action, they’re little more than a prop. They’re dispensable.

The main character is essentially a “you are here” sign moving along the story’s arc.

Don’t be the “you are here” sign in your own life.

A sign saying "stay on trail" with a stick figure of a hiker. It doesn't say "you are here" but it might as well.
I know this doesn’t say “you are here,” but you get the point.
